Forest Coast - Oil Paintings by Helen Utsal
|

You are Invited
Join Helen Utsal on March 5th as she celebrates the opening of her show Forest Coast running from March 5 – March 27, 2010 at the Muir Gallery
Exhibiting her paintings at Canadian galleries since 2006, and in Comox Valley group exhibitions such as Originals Only and Local Colours, Helen is pleased to fill the Muir gallery with her latest collection. Large canvases and panels can be viewed as windows as you walk from the ancient rainforest of Vancouver Island, out to the vast ocean and beach. Helens expressive paintings are saturated with rich colours only oil paint can achieve.
“Inspiration comes easily, trail running through rainforests on beautiful Vancouver Island, camping and exploring hidden bays on the coast. I feel compelled and challenged to try to capture the vibrancy and wealth of this place where I live. The name ‘Comox’ is taken from the original people: the K’omoks Indian band, who referred to it as ‘the land of plenty’; this could describe the whole island!
When visiting favorite ancient trees, and breathing in the mystical serenity they exude, or feeling the oceans elastic power pound through me as I struggle to hang on to my surfboard, I want to capture these feelings and share these experiences.
This collection is inspired by the earth and sea. I present them to you. May you be reminded of the immense value of our untouched natural landscape; the value of trees that are standing, and living.”
Wine and cheese will be served at the opening at 7:00 pm. The exhibition runs until March 27.

Help Advocate for the Arts
|
| The Comox Valley Community Arts Council has been working with many other arts organizations in our province to understand the current and proposed provincial funding cuts and have committed to working with each other in efforts towards advocacy for our communities and for individuals in our province. We have written letter to ministers, to our municipal governments and continue in a variety of efforts to advocate for all of us. We are asking you to take part in the many opportunities that are available. An amazing slideshow of photos representing a few summer months of arts events in our community has been put together by the wonderful Sarah Kerr and is on the media-video page of this website: www.comoxvalleyarts.org/videos.php
The Assembly of BC Arts Councils is working with other arts organizations to collect information to support our advocacy efforts. We have two new surveys which we hope will provide a clear picture of the effects on our members and their members, etc., of the cuts to Direct Access Gaming funds and potential cuts to BC Arts Council funding. This survey will stay up for several weeks, but we encourage you to try and fill them out by Friday, December 4, as we want to forward them directly to the Minister the following Monday. If this deadline doesn't work for you, we would still like to hear from you as our avocacy efforts will be ongoing. The first survey, Personally Meaningful Experiences, is meant to collect the true value of the arts and arts progams. Here we ask you to tell us the human story rather than the statistical one. Visit their website at www.assemblyofbcarts.org
Here are some links to other advocacy tools:
Visit website www.stopbcartscuts.ca where Prominent British Columbians and Canadians speak out against the cuts. It also has the names and contact information for MLA and lists of events taking place in support of these efforts.

Thank you for your support and for your continued efforts to keep our communities strong, healthy and full of creativite opportunities.
Dallas Stevenson, Executive Director
Quotes:
The Comox Valley is truly a Cultural Capitol of Canada - performing as a petrie dish where talent is being nurtured and developed in a warm and supportive environment. I was drawn here, like many others, by the plethora of art shows, galleries and excellent media coverage of art events - it was, and still is, a "Happenin' Place". Support for our creative people has been good, and that support must continue to grow if we are to live up to our name.
Marilyn Timms, Local Resident, Artist and Board Member of the BC Arts Council
